In this post we highlight some of the best cycling paths Liverpool has to offer including well-maintained national cycle routes and mountain biking options not too far away from the city! Liverpool is a great city to cycle in. There are plenty of safe traffic-free routes to enjoy and the scenery is beautiful with many views across the River Mersey. Known mostly for being a vibrant, football loving city, Liverpool's cycling network isn't well known to outsiders but is well worth your time experiencing the tarmac paths here. If you're looking for a fun way to explore Liverpool, cycling is the way to go!
You can take in the centre of the city on the Liverpool Loop Line, spot the wildlife at the many nature reserves on the Squirrel Cycle Route, or hire a bike and go mountain biking at Delamere Forest!

Liverpool Loop Line
The Liverpool Loop Line is a wonderful route that provides an escape from the city. The flat, easy, and traffic-free trail runs through Liverpool providing a pleasant feel amongst bustling city life which is perfect for beginning cyclists or families looking to enjoy a peaceful bike ride without having to go out to the countryside.

Squirrel Cycle Route
This fun and easy route is perfect for families! It passes by several nature reserves where you can stop and see the local wildlife in their natural habitats. The 7.5-mile Squirrel Cycle Route will take around an hour to complete and is mostly off-road. Southport is located just north of Liverpool and is easy to get there by car making this route a good option for an afternoon ride.
Curlew Cycle Route
On a beautiful day, there is no better way to enjoy the outdoors than with an incredible bike ride on the Curlew Cycle Route. Head out towards Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre and take this circular route along the coast as you pass Antony Gormley’s Another Place statues before arriving at Seaforth Freeport where you can find spectacular views of both Wirral and the North Wales coastline!

The Wirral Way
The 'Wirral Way' is a well known traffic free cycle route that stretches for 12 miles and takes in Wirral Country Park along the journey. Following the old Birkenhead Railway route from Hooton to West Kirby, the family-friendly route takes you along the coastline providing stunning views of the estuary of the River Dee.
Otterspool Promenade to Sefton Park
This cycling route is a scenic ride through some of the south of the city's prettiest spots. You will take in plenty of gardens and lakes on your journey and will cycle alongside the River Mersey taking in the sights and sounds of the Liverpool Bay. Once you arrive at Sefton Park (which covers 235 acres), you'll be able to stop for a relaxing break after riding this 8-mile scenic route.

MTB: Delamere Forest
Delamere Forest is an excellent place to explore on two wheels. The well-maintained routes make for great riding, and there are plenty of hidden gems waiting just around each turn that will give you even more fun than expected! Situated around a 50-minute drive from Liverpool city centre, the forest offers opportunities to get the mountain bike out and have a blast!
